Proposal Defense Vs Final Defense

Most doctoral programs split the defense into two stages, and each one tests something different.

The proposal defense comes after Chapters 1 to 3, often called the dissertation proposal. It focuses on your foundation: your literature review, your research methodology, and your planned approach to collecting and analyzing data. Your committee wants to know that your plan is sound before you carry it out.

The final defense comes after Chapters 4 and 5. It focuses on your results, your discussion of what those results mean, and the conclusions you can fairly draw from them. Online doctoral programs follow the same path. Your final defense may happen over Zoom, but you still present your research live and answer your committee in real time. We prepare you for whichever stage you are facing, so your slides and your answers match exactly what that committee expects.

Defending A Qualitative Or Quantitative Dissertation

How you defend depends a lot on your methodology, so we tailor your prep to the path you took.

If you used a qualitative methodology, your final defense is usually more direct. Your committee will ask how themes came out of your study, why you made your methodology choices, how you ran your data collection, and how you used software such as NVivo, MAXQDA, ATLAS.ti, or Dedoose. Knowing your thematic analysis steps, meaning how you found patterns in your interviews, focus groups, or observations, is often enough to carry the defense.

If you used a quantitative methodology, be ready to explain your independent and dependent variables, the statistical models you chose, and the tests you ran to check for meaningful relationships in your data. You may be asked about your software, such as SPSS, Stata, R, SAS, or Python, and how you computed key results. The math you need in a presentation is rarely heavy. Many of our past clients came in with little statistics background and still defended their work with confidence after preparing with us.
