The word autobiography literally means SELF (auto), LIFE (bio), WRITING (graph). Or, in other words, an autobiography is the story of someone’s life written or otherwise told by that person. When writing your autobiography, find out what makes your family or your experience unique and build a narrative around that.

The best way to write an autobiography is to treat your life as an interesting story. Starting from birth, enhance the story’s appeal as you take the reader or listener through the different stages of your life. Both biography and autobiography tell the story of an individual person’s life.

  1. Before writing an autobiography, read a variety of autobiographies published by mainstream publishers.
  2. An important step in writing an autobiography is choosing the focal point or theme, discussed in detail on the page about learning how to write an autobiography.
  3. Create an outline of the key obstacles in your life.

One good way to begin an autobiography is by immediately diving into a particularly significant or meaningful incident from your life.

Just like the biography of a famous person, your autobiography should include things like the time and place of your birth, an overview of your personality, your likes and dislikes, and the special events that shaped your life. Your first step is to gather background detail.

A short biography is typically four sentences, approximately 150 to 200 words or less, in length. A long biography depends on the website requirements and is usually two to three short paragraphs in length.

It is both easy and difficult to write an autobiography. It’s easy because you’re just telling what you’ve been through but it’s difficult because an autobiography is only for celebrities or important figures. I’m just an ordinary person, so making the autobiography attractive was a challenge for me.

Humans are value seekers and passion drives competence. Graduating from college makes you as smart as playing in a basketball team makes you tall. It simply doesn’t work that way. Jordan Belfort, portrayed by Leonardo Di Caprio in Wolf of Wallstreet, had one passion and one only, selling stuff and making money. What he needs millions of dollars for, neither I know, nor do I care. He left medical school as soon as he heard that the golden years of making huge amounts of money pretty easily are over and started selling fish and meat on a street corner. When it wasn’t profitable, yeah, big shocker, enough he started working as a stock broker for L.F. Rothschild. How did he get the job ? Well, he gave them a call and tried to sell them stocks. Would I buy his autobiography ? Well, they even made a DiCaprio movie out of it. Find your passion and stay with it. Once you are good enough capitalize on it. If you can’t capitalize on it, you must either lower your price or increase your quality. Don’t misunderstand me, costumers or employers usually demand an insane amount of quality. If you are not passionate, you simply can’t deliver. The secret of success is try, fail and repeat, that’s all there is. You tried and failed, good, now go out and fail again.

#2 Find People Who Share Your Passion

John Irving was basically holding lectures and giving talks about English literature and was making very little money. How he got in a better position ? First he found his passion, he was fascinated with successful people’s biographies, so he saved the little he had and spent it on books. Before long he started writing this famous and rich people and eventually one of them answered. You might have heard that George R.R. Martin story, author of Game of Thrones, who hired one of his fans, after the guy figured out who Jon Snow’s mother was. People love people, who share their passions. So find them and tell them about. They might kick your ass out of the door, so what ? Try, fail and repeat. You really can’t screw that up, but do it sincerely, people love appreciation and hate flattery.

#3 Create an Alter Ego

When I was young, I really was into piano and I didn’t give a flying fuck about playing guitar and I was wrong. I wasn’t wrong because guitar music is that great, but because I could only understand my personal point of view. If I don’t care about others why should they bother, there is simply no reason to do so. If you are blind on one eye, you might end as well with an empty purse and a dagger in your back. #Hashtag MakeAmericaGreatAgain. So before start writing ask yourself „What if…“ and keep it crazy. I had this one girl friend, who tended to order the most exotic stuff on the menu and usually ended up with some really terrible Nepalese food she wouldn’t finish. It drove me crazy, but she was damn right. Dealing with words means dealing with fantasies. Fantasies are different from daily life experience. You have to try things. But please spare dumbass vampire stories out. This one is dead.

#4 What would Brad Pitt do

Grow some balls. Do you know what all successful people have in common ? They are ballsy as hell, as this is, what made them successful in the first place. Nobody cares about whether you are sincere or right, they just want to know that you are certain. So, if you are sitting in front of an empty sheet of paper, write your thoughts down and don’t care about what others might think about you. They don’t care anyway. If some random idiot calls Brad Pitt out „Hey Yo, Brad, your movie sucks.“ Do you honestly believe he cares. He makes millions of dollars and is married with Angelina Jolie, of course he doesn’t. To be treated like a king you first have to act like a king. Stephen King was rejected many times over, so was J.K. Rowling is your wirting as good as theirs ? If you take everything personal, chances are you will end like Tupac Shakur, who didn’t make it in his 30s.

#5 Do Something With Movies

This one always surprises me, but for some magical reason people love movie examples. There is this one Youtube Channel called Charisma on Command, which I really enjoy, solely focused on teaching positive character traits based on TV shows. You think, you can’t use Game of Thrones in a business enviroment ? You are wrong. (Sidebar Video How Power Really Works) The point is, most people’s life sucks. The only things they know something about are sports, celebrities and TV shows. If you want them to get you, you have to find a common tone. Don’t make them think and don’t make them feel stupid. They will hate you for that one. The biggest mistake people make in their everyday life is trying too hard to impress others. Don’t be one of them. Think about it like a beautiful girl in a bar and try to go to her and tell her „Hey, I got a big house and a nice car, you wanna fuck ?“. One in a ten says yes, but those are the crazy bitches, who will try to burn your clothes in the morning. As long as you are, who you are make her feel comfortable and talk about things she has an opinion of, things usually go pretty straight, writing a creative autobiography, hardly makes any difference.
